Detox Your Body & Home

Lately there has been a lot of buzz about Detox programs.  People are seeking ways to cleanse their bodies of toxins for many reasons:  weight loss, heart burn, digestive problems such as gas and bloating, acne and other skin problems, body aches and pains, fatigue or just to become healthier.  With the marketplace filled with more and more processed foods, additives, sweeteners and convenience / fast foods to assist with hectic schedules, our bodies need to work harder than ever to get rid of these toxins we consume.  And when we also consider the environmental toxins we are exposed to from the chemicals, dyes and fragrances in cleaning products, make-up, beauty products, and air fresheners…just to name a few – it certainly is time to DETOX!

The good news is the body has its own natural daily cleansing process to eliminate or filter out the toxins through the use of the liver, kidneys, colon, intestines and skin!  Our job is to expose it to the least amount of environmental toxins and give it the best possible nutrients to be able to do its job well!

Nutrition impacts every aspect of our health.  Food is not merely fuel for our bodies; it becomes our body as the nutrients are utilized to create structures that make up our muscles, bones, hormones, organs and brain!  Therefore all the systems in our body are influenced greatly by what we eat.  The quality of our food has far reaching impact on just about any chronic health condition, so everything we eat can bring us either closer to health and wellness or closer to illness and disease.

Through empowering and educating people on optimal nutrition and ways to limit toxic exposure, we can create health for ourselves, our families and our community.  Identifying and eliminating sources of toxicity and learning how to prepare foods that promote health and strengthen the immune system is key to not only our own health and wellness but also for our children.  Determining sources of toxic exposure in our homes and learning how to eliminate them will give our children and loved ones the best possible environment to heal, repair and thrive.

Come learn how to reduce the toxins you are exposed to for a long and healthier lifespan for you and your loved onesLearn about juicing, smoothies and other ways to use food to support optimal health, healing and detoxification.  We’ll also provide you with resources to find clean makeup and body products.  Sample some of Dr. Claudia’s favorite juices and smoothies and enjoy making a few of her cleaning, beauty and body products to take home with you to begin your journey to a less toxic body and home!

2019 Detox Rituals to Nurture your Body and Soul

Start 2019 by establishing healthy habits that will nurture your body and soul and improve your health.  Remember!  We are body and soul beings.  If you are only detoxifying your body you only complete half of the task toward optimal health.

Immediately upon rising:

  1. 10 minutes of prayer/meditation
  2. 10 deep diaphragmatic breaths
  3. Set the tone for the day by setting a positive mindset
    1. Turn your complaints into positive affirmations.  Be mindful of the words you are speaking.  They are defining YOU:  are they all negative, complaints, criticism?
    2. Make a point of performing at least one act of kindness for another person each day (and record it at the end of your day)

Throughout your day:

  1. Prior to eating your meals:  practice expressing gratefulness for your meal
  2. Put your phone/and other devices away while eating.  Digestive enzymes are released when we think about food and as we see and eat our food. If your brain is focused on other tasks the release of such enzymes essential for digestion will be arrested or delayed and your food will be harder to digest – indigestion!

Dr. Claudia’s story: “When I came to the US about 14 years ago, the village where my parents lived never had any cardiovascular disease and cancer was something that we believed only people in Westernized countries had. They were cultivating the land, ate what they raised, had farms and were consistent with getting together to pray and celebrate God and each other. Fast forwarding 14 years later after westernizing their diet, giving up on cultivating the land and choosing modern agriculture instead of their traditional one, and eating processed foods: one in two people has cancer and many die of cardiovascular disease every day in the same region that for hundreds of years didn’t know these diseases. When I call back home my mom now tells me that “only old people” get together anymore to pray and celebrate life.  “The young ones” are too busy working. She goes on to say that “they have the same diseases that people in Westernized countries have”: they are overweight, depressed, sick and tired and are too busy to enjoy their lives! I don’t need a scientific study to tell me what’s going on. I can see it clearly.”

Detox & Cleanses to help kick start New Year’s Resolutions

Selection of colorful smoothies, rustic wood background, copy space

Detox & Cleanse, ways that many people kick start their New Year’s Resolutions to be healthier. People are seeking ways to cleanse their bodies of toxins for many reasons:

  • weight loss
  • digestive problems
  • acne and other skin problems
  • body aches and pains
  • fatigue
  • or just to become healthier

With the marketplace filled with more and more processed foods, additives, sweeteners and convenience / fast foods to help with hectic schedules, our bodies need to work harder than ever to get rid of these toxins we consume.

Detox programs need to have two components:

  1. to help your body eliminate the toxins
  2. to help break the addiction of the ‘toxic’ food you are eating

The body has its own natural daily cleansing process to eliminate or filter out the toxins through the use of the liver, kidneys, colon, intestines and skin.  Doing a juice cleanse will help reduce the amount of toxins the body has to eliminate, but you’ll also need to change your eating habits and food choices after the juice cleanse is over to maintain good health by limiting your intake of toxins.  During the ‘detox’ time, bread, sweets, desserts, coffee or processed foods are off limits.  These are loaded with things our bodies have become addicted to such as sugar, wheat, caffeine and saturated fats.  With any addiction, the body craves what it is addicted to, whether its sugar, bread, alcohol or cigarettes, and wants more and more to feel satisfied.  Just as an alcoholic’s detox program is to (stop drinking) eliminate the toxic and addictive alcohol, the job of a nutritional detox is to (stop eating junk) eliminate the food choices we make that are toxic and addictive to us.

Just as an alcoholic cannot begin drinking alcohol again after
they’ve completed a detox, healthier eating habits and food choices need to be continually made after a nutritional detox.

During the course of a detox or cleansing program the body may not always feel its best, particularly through the first few days. Being monitored by a healthcare provider who specializes in nutrition is essential to help you through any obstacles you encounter and to ensure your detox process is healthy and safe.

Suffering from headaches or fatigue during the detox may simply be caused from the lack of caffeine that you normally get from your coffee, but other more serious issues may be happening to your body during a detox or cleanse that can also make you feel weak, fatigued or dizzy.  Your detox may not provide the minimum calories or protein your body needs.  This is not advisable.  Consuming only a ‘juice cleanse’ can make your insulin levels spike and then crash. The lack of calories and/or protein can force your body to burn muscle mass for energy, which can give you that weak, fatigued feeling that’s not from a lack of coffee!

Exercise is important during any detoxification program, but it should not be overly strenuous during this time. Ultimately, exercise will also help ensure a healthy body composition, the relationship between your lean muscle tissue and your body fat.  Maintaining and/or building muscle mass will help increase your metabolism to burn calories faster. By adding muscle building exercise, the scale may not be ‘moving down’ but you will be ‘slimming down’!  That’s because you are building muscles which weigh more than the fat you are burning while exercising, making you leaner.  Here is where the dividends to a consistent resistance exercise program pay off big.

Stress can also be toxic to your body.  Your body produces stress hormones to protect itself.  Your body needs that stress hormone (cortisol/adrenaline) when you’re being chased by an attack dog, but if you are always under stress and your body is continually releasing large amounts of these stress hormones, your liver needs to work overtime for them to be detoxified.  Learning stress reduction techniques such as deep breathing or yoga exercise can be very helpful.

The detox or cleanse is just the beginning part of the NMR weight management program which will guide you through the steps to help clean out and eliminate foods that are toxic or “addictions” to your body.  Break your habit of eating foods that are not helping with your weight loss and start learning how to replenish your body with quality low fat proteins, healthy carbohydrates and fats, as well as supplements when needed.
