Biofeedback Therapy

Biofeedback Therapy is a mind-body technique used to learn how to control your body’s response to stress and is useful in treating many disorders like tension headaches, migraines, high blood pressure and anxiety.

The brain has a remarkable capacity to reorganize pathways and create new connections. Biofeedback Therapy teaches patients how they can gain control over biological functions that normally occur automatically beneath the level of awareness such as blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and brainwave frequency.

At Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation we use complex biofeedback machines and computer software to detect internal bodily functions with great sensitivity and precision that allow involuntary physical functions to be translated in ways that can be understood. In essence biofeedback is a psychophysiological mirror by which a patient can monitor and learn from physiological signals produced by their bodies and can see in real time how their thoughts, emotions and body are interconnected.

With biofeedback therapy you will gain awareness and learn skills needed to influence your respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and muscle activity! Benefits of biofeedback therapy:

  • Decrease muscle tension
  • Increase blood flow, circulation
  • Improve mood
  • Increase energy level
  • Improve quality of sleep
  • Manage chronic pain
  • Muscle re-education
  • Improve concentration and focus

The Pain-Stress Cycle can be hard to break! Chronic pain appears to persist long after the natural healing process has occurred and can truly be defined as pain that extends beyond the expected period of tissue repair and healing. It is with chronic pain that an individual’s suffering occurs.

Living with chronic pain can be inherently stressful. When your body constantly feels stressed, your hormone levels of cortisol rise, causing inflammation and pain over time. With persistent pain, the brain puts the body in a state of fight or flight, causing physical effects in the body. Overtime the brain “learns” to continue to put the body in a painful state, which begins the pain-stress cycle.

Therefore, changes created in the brain due to protracted and intense stimulation of pain nerves that will intensify, prolong and make more widespread, the sensation of pain, even long after the healing process of those bodily tissues has occurred can contribute to being in chronic pain.

With biofeedback therapy, the brain can ‘unlearn’ being in a state of pain and stop this recurring pain cycle. With biofeedback therapy our patients can gain awareness and learn skills needed to influence muscle activity which helps to decrease pain.
