Pain is one of the reasons people go to the doctor. Usually, this pain may last for weeks and you feel an ache, burn or sting that you just can’t ignore. The pain can be so bad that it starts causing issues such as depression, anxiety, and abuse of pain meds which can be lethal by the end of the day. Well, one of the treatments used to ease such kind of pain is laser therapy.

Laser therapy can bring faster relief, it is safe, and treats conditions in the body without it having to undergo surgery or administration of some types of medication.

What can you treat with Laser Therapy?

Laser therapy can be used for issues such as neck pain, back pain, arthritis, muscle strains, neck and shoulder pain, ligament sprains, tennis elbow, and tendinitis just to name a few. Also, laser treatment can be used to shrink and destroy tumors, relieve cancer symptoms, remove sections of the prostate and kidney stones, repair a retina that has detached, and improve vision.

How does it work?

Laser therapy also known as low-level laser therapy or cold laser therapy works by decreasing nerve sensitivity by decreasing the pain-generating chemical. It also normalizes the “cellular gatekeepers” causing the body to release the body’s natural pain reliever and other hormones that produce a natural analgesic effect. The therapy will produce a visible light that produces a photochemical reaction within the body cells and this reaction is what will end up bringing relief to the patient.

It is also important to note that the therapy is at times referred to as cold therapy because the therapy does not produce heat. During this treatment wavelengths that vary from 400-760 nanometers are used to penetrate the skin, soft and hard tissues. The technician will align the laser device with the area with pain and inflammation then the laser will penetrate the skin. Once the light has penetrated cells convert the light into cell energy which is then used by the body to suppress the pain and thus causing relief long-term.

How long does it take for laser therapy to work?

The entire process only takes an average of 10 minutes (depending on the size of the place being treated) but you will have to go back a few more times.

For chronic pain, the patient may need to go 2-3 times a week. One may feel improvement after the first session but it is important to note that the treatment is cumulative. The more the sessions the better it gets. But on average the results can be felt after 2-3 sessions.

Benefits of Laser Therapy

Laser therapy has the following benefits:

  • Offers a cost-effective treatment which is a good alternative to surgery.
  • Effectively deals with inflammation.
  • Increases blood flow.
  • Is safe and painless.
  • Accelerates tissue repair.
  • Does not require the use of medicine.
  • Does not require any recovery time.
  • It saves time since the process only takes a few minutes.
  • The process is customizable to meet your specific needs.
  • Provides long-lasting pain relief.
  • The procedure does not need admission thus is convenient for outpatients.
  • Wounds heal faster and tissue can regenerate.
  • The procedure involves less damage to the surrounding tissue.
  • There is less risk of bacterial infection since the laser sterilizes the area.
  • With some procedures anesthesia is unnecessary.

Laser treatment is non-invasive; this means that no surgical incision is required and therefore no prolonged recovery time as seen in surgery. Also, after the procedure, the patient does not have to take any medication, and this is very convenient for those patients who dislike medicine.

Besides research has shown that this type of treatment does not have serious side effects when properly administered. Additionally, laser therapy helps reduce swelling and inflammation as well as accelerate tissue healing.

One may notice a recurring theme here, the connection between heart health and brain health.
