Merciér Therapy for Fertility

Merciér Therapy for Fertility

One in eight women has trouble achieving or sustaining pregnancy in the United States. If you’re one of those women, Merciér therapy is a non-invasive option that’s showing promising results to address certain types of infertility.

At Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation, we offer a wide range of natural, holistic fertility treatment options, including Merciér therapy. We can help you find the best solution to progress on your journey to parenthood.

What is Merciér Therapy?

Merciér therapy is a form of physiotherapy that utilizes deep pelvic visceral manipulation to help improve reproductive health. Created by Dr. Jennifer Merciér from Chicago in 2005, it can be effective in improving fertility problems, incontinence, pelvic pain, and more.

Many gynecological conditions can leave behind scar tissue that may hinder blood flow and organ function. Merciér therapy helps release and reposition the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding organs to restore circulation and mobility throughout the pelvic region. It is most effective for infertility caused by chronic conditions, such as:

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Scar tissue from trauma or surgery
  • Low or poor ovarian reserve

A complete Merciér therapy protocol lasts six hours, divided into one-hour weekly sessions. Each session includes a range of different abdominal movements to help recover restricted organs. During treatment, our fertility experts document weekly progress to measure the likelihood of success.

Merciér therapy aids women who want to achieve pregnancy naturally. It is effective as a stand-alone treatment option but can also be used in addition to other fertility treatments.

How Merciér Therapy Increases Fertility

To understand how Merciér therapy helps improve fertility, you need to understand infertility and some of the possible causes of infertility. Any woman over the age of 35 that doesn’t fall pregnant within a year of trying is considered infertile. For women under 35, that time frame drops to six months. Women who can become pregnant but cannot carry a pregnancy to term are also considered infertile.

Infertility falls into two categories:

  1. Primary Infertility – A woman who has never been able to achieve pregnancy
  2. Secondary Infertility – A woman who has had a successful pregnancy but cannot conceive again

There are several causes of female infertility, but some of the highest risk factors include:

  • Age
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Drug use
  • Heavy alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • Some sexually transmitted infections
  • Scar tissue from a previous surgery

Merciér therapy addresses some of these causes by enhancing blood flow to the reproductive organs. The extra blood flow may eliminate any restrictions preventing the organs from functioning properly.

Not only does Merciér therapy help your reproductive organs, but it can also increase the way the rest of your body functions, as reproductive health can have a significant impact on hormone production, which affects far more than fertility.

If your body is functioning to its highest capacity, your chances of success are higher during a medically assisted cycle. Current research suggests that Merciér therapy has a success rate of around 80%. The treatment is even proving to be more successful and affordable than IUI or IVF treatments.

Merciér therapy can also alleviate any pain or soreness around the pelvic region. It’s an excellent choice for women looking to conceive their first child naturally or who want to have another baby.

Is Merciér Therapy Safe?

Overall, Merciér therapy is an extremely safe form of treatment for women looking to increase their fertility or organ function. However, some women shouldn’t try Merciér therapy, including women who:

  • Have an Intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Are taking Essure
  • Currently have a pelvic infection
  • Have any form of cancerous cells

Since it’s a gentle, visceral pelvic manipulation technique, Merciér therapy is virtually painless. However, patients with restrictions around the pelvis might feel slightly uncomfortable during treatment. This discomfort comes from the deep pelvic organ massage, which can be quite intense.

Our specialists are attentive and caring. If you do feel any pain, they will adjust as necessary or even end the session if you feel uncomfortable continuing. In cases, there may be slight soreness after the treatment as well, but this is usually not even enough to warrant over-the-counter pain medication.

If you have ever had a deep tissue massage, you can expect a similar feeling during your Merciér therapy sessions. An experienced therapist can perform each session as gently as possible so that you experience minimal discomfort.

It’s important to note that while Merciér therapy is safe and effective, it doesn’t guarantee a successful pregnancy. Women considering Merciér therapy should think of it as a supplementary treatment rather than a stand-alone option.

That said, you should always look for a reliable and experienced therapist who knows how to provide proper treatment. If you don’t seek out a reputable clinic, you could end up wasting your time and money.
