Biofeedback Therapy, Mind-Body technique to teaches people how to improve their health

Sean Shoemaker RN, LMT, Biofeedback Therapist

Biofeedback Therapy is used to treat a wide range of health problems including the treatment of headaches, migraines, disorders that cause chronic pain, disorders of the digestive system, anxiety disorders, Raynaud’s disease, gastrointestinal disorders, and movement disorders. Biofeedback Therapy is a mind-body technique that teaches people how to improve their health by influencing bodily processes that normally happen involuntarily such as heart rate, respiration and muscle activity.

Thermometers used to take your temperature or scales used to weigh yourself are examples of biofeedback devices that you may recognize. These devices give information ‘feedback’ about your body’s ‘bio’ condition. At Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation we use complex biofeedback machines and computer software to detect internal bodily functions with great sensitivity and precision that allow these physical functions to be translated in ways that can be understood.  In essence, biofeedback is a psycho-physiological mirror by which a patient can monitor and learn from physiological signals produced by their bodies and can see in real time how their thoughts, emotions and body are interconnected.

The same way that you need to practice a sport/activity, a musical instrument, cooking/baking, etc., biofeedback therapy also requires practice.  Along with biofeedback therapy performed in the office, you will practice self-regulation skills in the ‘real world’.  The commitment that you make to complete treatment will benefit you for the rest of your life.  The biofeedback therapist will use cognitive-behavioral interventions such as cognitive restructuring, stress management, visualization and imagery to teach you how you can self-regulate your body and eventually do so without the use of biofeedback equipment.

Benefits of biofeedback therapy:

  • Decrease muscle tension
  • Increase blood flow, circulation
  • Improve mood
  • Increase energy level
  • Improve quality of sleep
  • Manage chronic pain
  • Muscle re-education
  • Improve concentration and focus

Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation takes a holistic approach to health care. We believe in order to achieve long-term health and wellness, that treatment should be patient-centered rather than disease-centered.  Symptom relief is often the primary goal of conventional medicine; our goals are to identify and treat the cause of the symptom as well as strengthen and stabilize the body so the patient can enjoy their health for years to come.

Biofeedback therapy is one of the many services that we offer to help our patients minimize pain, decrease anxiety and depression,  improve circulation, improve performance, gain awareness and achieve long-term wellness.

Biofeedback Therapy is covered by most insurance policies.  If you would like more information about biofeedback therapy or other services offered at Natural Medicine & Rehabilitation please call us to set up a complimentary consultation for new patients. 908-252-0242
